Debi and flocks mixture - South Carolina
I make a mixture of cheerio's...uncooked spiral pasta...dried blueberries..dried apricots...dried hot peppers.....I add a little bit of either progrow...beak appetite or crazy corn. My fids love it..I will experiment and add different dried fruits and dried veggies..I am learning there isn't anything they won't eat if I have the right combination...am learning what that is with every meal

Plumped Corn - Submitted byDe, Ed and the Gang...Kerns Parrots
Originally from Carolyn Land of Vos
3 cups of shelled corn or popcorn   1 cup of split peas (We use 1/2 of green peas & 1/2 yellow peas)    6-7 cups of water
Cook in crockpot until corn is plump (We put it on about midnite and it is done by 6 am).  Add 1/2 cup of Brown Rice and 1/2 cup of White Rice (may need to add more water)  Cook for about another 45 minutes.  Drain well and then put into a sieve and rinse very well with hot water. Season with garlic, cinnamon, or whatever else your fid may like.
Now this makes a very large amount (we feed over 35 birds).  We put in freezer bags in daily portions and freeze.  (We use the vaccum sealer type and will last long time in freezer.)  We thaw in microwave and then add veggies to the mix just before feeding.

PineCone Treats originally from Gay - submitted by Nancy
It's quite easy, but can be a little messy.
Ingredients.
*Pure Honey *Seed Mix of your choice (smaller works better) *Egg Whites *Pine Cones of your choice *Corn Meal (optional) *Cotton String to hang with
Prepare pine cones (heating in oven) Boil the honey for 3 - 5 minutes over lower heat. This is important to kill any bacteria that may be present in non-pasturized honey and also evaporates a bit of excess liquid. In a big tray or large cake pan, have the seed mix and corn meal if you are using it. Corn meal does help to hold it all together a bit better. Pour the honey over the seeds and mix well. Let it cool enough so you can handle it with your fingers. Tie a string onto the fat end of the pinecones (you may want to do this as the honey is boiling) Roll the pincone in the honey/seed mix. Use your fingers to stuff it right into the cone. Squeeze it all in with your hand. Quickly roll the seed covered cone in a bowl of beaten egg whites, just to coat it. Place on cookie sheet that has been covered with tin foil. You have to move fairly quickly or the seed mix will start to harden. If it does, zap it in the microwave to soften again. Place cookie sheet (with pinecones) in a very slow oven 175 degrees F. for approx 4 hours. Turn them over after a couple of hours. DO NOT try to speed it up with a hotter oven. You will regret it. Let them cook and then store in brown paper bag. Yes, they can be kept in the freezer.
BTW, please don't use cones from a Cedar Tree.

Cooking Safety Tip be Cindy and peaNut
I just pulled a cake out of the oven & had to leave peaNut in her cage 'til the pan cooled enough & I thought, wouldn't it be
nice to have one of those meshy tenty things used to cover picnic dishes outside to keep the flies off? !I think I'll talk my mom into letting me borrow hers for the winter so I'll have it handy in case I want to protect peaNut from hot casserole dishes, baking/pie pans while they cool
on the counter...

Beggie Birdie Bites - Sherry - Itty Bitty Birdie Bites
This is a new product that I think might be of help to many of us looking for ways to recreate the dinners are Bids were used to.  (PTO) This is what Sherry said in her announcement.
Beggie Birdie Bits!  Sprinkle on germinated seeds, legumes, and grains, plus lots of veggies and greens, plus organic herbs and spices -all natural, raw, and YUMMY!

Feeding tip - One of the best ways to get your bird eating something new is o share it with them, or better stated they share with you..For example..Take an apple. Get your bird and sit down..Talk and play with him/her as usual. After a fewminutes casually pick up the apple and take a bite.Do not ofer it to your bird but do make lots of num num sounds and rude lip smacking noises..:-) When your bird shows a little spark of interest offer them a taste. From the apple. Do not at this time cut off a separate piece. If they look it over, allow them to.If they back off don't say a word just go back to enjoying your apple.Birds have a natural curiosity so it will not be long till they want your apple. Also they perceive you to be a member of the flock and they will want to have whatever another flock member is having..This may take a couple of tries so do not give up after the first attempt. Patience is the key.

Miniature Pumpkins - Judie - Toronto, Canada
This idea came to e from the Grey List
Take a miniature pumpkin, Wash the ourside really well.
Pop it in the microwave for 2-4 minutes depeding upon how
small it is..
Remove and all ow to cool.
***It takes quite a long time for the inside to cool if you do not cut it in hald.
Serve as is and watch your birds have fun tearing it up..To get them
started it is a good idea to cut the first one in half so they se the goodies in their..
Good for any size or species of bird...

Pumpkin Bowls - Jules -
We like to get the mini pumpkins, scoop the guts out, and mix the guts with something like Beak Apetit' or bean and rice, fruits, and veggies then microwave them for about a minute or so, until the pumpkin is cooked.
They are self contained serving dishes, and edible too!

Pine Cones  Gal   Fids Only Texas
Pine cones make excellent toys for birds.  When collecting pine cones, ensure that they are not old, damp, moldy or are growling moss.  Ideally
one should collect pine cones as soon as possible after they have fallen to the ground and before they have become wet from rain.  This is not
always possible.  Pine cones are also a favorite hiding spot for little beasts such as spiders and earwigs.
It is not possible to "sterilize" pine cones but heating in an oven will kill molds and little critters and make them safe for the birds to chew
on.  I heat pine cones in an oven for about 20 minutes at 225° F, then turn off the oven.  The pine cones are left in the oven for approx. 2
hours to dry out.  It is important not to exceed 225° F. otherwise the pine cones will scorch and possibly catch on fire.
The seeds inside the cones are a special treat and are safe for all birds to eat.

****Special request.****....There is a recipe for taking the pine cones, one sterilized, and stuffing them with seeds..I know it is a mixture of seeds, honey and a couple of other things. Then they are baked...If anyone has this recipe and would share with us I would really like to add it to this page...and be able to make it for my birds..Please send to me Judie at wellman1@ca.inter.net

HOMEMADE AVICAKES   Gal   Fids Only   Texas
2 C. crushed cereal(Cheerios or Shredded Wheat)
2 C. instant oatmeal cereal
2 C. assorted seeds
Add about 1 1/4 C. Honey  Stir until mixture is wet, but NOT dripping. You may need to adjust the honey.  You can substitute corn syrup if you
don't like to use honey.  Pour onto oiled cookie sheet and spread out. Bake at 200 - 225° for about 45 minutes.  Halfway through cooking, I
usually score them to make it easier to cut.

***** I am not sure but I would think this mixture could be stuffed into the pine cones..Sterilized as instructed above and then baked as per directions in recipe...If anyone tries this please let us know how it works for you.. wellman1@ca.inter.net

Feeding Tip - Finicky eater by Chris and Milo -
Milo has been a real pill about eating fruits, veggies, rice, anything but seeds and pellets.
We had a little breakthrough this weekend.Maybe this advice is good for reluctant eaters.
I found Kitchen Creations, By Kaytee at Petsmart.  It's a prepackaged pasta
mix with dehydrated veggies and pasta - a spicey kind with hot peppers.
I cooked it up as per instructions, mashed up some sweet potato in it, added
chopped up frozen peas, then mixed his seeds up in it so he couldn't get
seeds without having them touched by yucky veggie morsals.  Milo
actually ate some of the vegie pasta mix while he was getting at his seeds.
He threw quite a bitout, and had some beak-wipe demonstrations, but I got
some into him.
I don't know if that's a recipe, or trickery, but it's the closest he's come to
eating a variety of foods.
PS..The Kitchen Creation Pasta Meal bag is so attractive that my husband almost cooked some up for us, before he saw that it was for birds!

Newly Weaned Suggestion
I found Katie my Congo African Grey at 6 months of age did not want her formula anymore. She would stick her tongue out making it very difficult to feed her..But, she would whine as if she wanted something. I started to give her warmed baby food. Baby food vegies and fruits are pure foods containing no additives whatsoever. She took to these like a duck takes to water. She was happy to have alittle warm something at bedtime and I was happy to be getting some extra pure good foods into her...  :-)

Itty Bitty Birdie Salad Recipe - Sherry - Itty Bitty Birdie Foods
First I put about a tablespoon of herb mix (www.allbirdtoys.com HerbalSupreme), a teaspoon of red
pepper flakes, a teaspoon of flax seeds, a couple tablespoons of dried kale leaves, and a tablespoon
of sesame seeds(these are rough estimates) in the Ultimate Chopper and give them a couple of
2-second pulses; The result is like a course ground coffee, not quite a powder.
Next I take slice of peeled and washed sweet potato, about 3" across and about ½" thick, and run
it through my Ultimate Chopper until the pieces areabout the size of grains of rice.
(Sometimes I substitute and equivalent amount of squash like butternut or pumpkin or some
other orange squash, in which case I also use the seeds.)
Then I take about ½ cup of frozen mixed veggies, plus a couple chunks of frozen broccoli,
and give them a few pulses until they're coursely ground.
(They get their fresh veggies separately because they make this recipe too
wet.)
Next I take about a cup of whatever sprouts (actually barely starting to pop open)
I happen to have on hand (In this picture it was adzuki, mung beans, lentil, chickpeas,
sunflower, fenugreek, peas, barley, wheatberries, millet, and probably a few things
I'm forgetting) and pulse those for about 2 seconds; it doesn't take long to make them
like a very fine cole slaw.
Finally I mix everything together with a dash of powdered ginger.  The final
product is fairly dry, and none of the pieces are any bigger than a grain of
raw rice, or a safflower seed.  And there are no birds in my flock that
won't eat it, from the tiniest to the largest, even 23YO Pokey 'tiel who
lived on seeds and potato chips much
of his life :).
This makes enough for my flock of 14 for one serving each, and I offer 2-3
days/week.
